We are now about to create a process which will allow people to submit translations of our symbols into different languages. The process will be described further in future posts, but initially we are planning the following:

a) Two people are involved in the process (Submitter and Committer) - and in true Open Source terms, we'd like to encourage anyone to feel they can contribute translations. As long as you have registered at Straight-Street, you are allowed to SUBMIT your set of translations. The reason for this is that we might need to get back to someone via their email address.
b) a COMMITTER operates as a team leader. Again, anyone can volunteer to become a COMMITTER but that role is authorised by the admins back at Straight-Street. We will probably have one person per language who will be authorised to COMMIT the translations, having checked them over. In other words, the COMMITTER doesn't necessrily do any translation, but instead take ownership of examining any submissions that are made. Our first COMMITTER will probably be for the Ukrainian language and our friends in Finland have also helped us with earlier translations that helped us devise the process we need to implement (it was previously a very manual process).
c) for the SUBMITTER we will try to make the process as simple as possible, whereby Google will offer a suggested translation from English to another language, but its up to a human (the SUBMITER) to do a 'common sense' check on th words Google is offering. The SUBMITTER passes on a set of translations to the COMMITTER who decides whether and when these should 'go live'.

It's good that Garry has posted the current state of the standards for the creation of new symbols. It means that reviewers will be able to focus on these when the next review takes place.

I believe that there will be a review very soon. I am looking forward to it.

I think that we could take the opportunity, after that review, to;

1) Review the existing symbols to make sure that the standards have been adhered to.

2) Make sure that those symbols that have fallen out of the set are replaced; cheese; stilton; apple - Are there any others?

3) Look at the Tags that could be added to symbols. This has been implemented partially and is very useful where it has been done. For exmple, in the gallery at the Straight-street site, typing in 'meat' brings up a lot of symbols of meat products. Having a 'clothes' tag, would really help.
There is a'verb' tag at the moment but it has not been added to all verbs. I suggest that, from now on, there should be a known set of tags and that these should be applied to all existing and new symbols. Tags may end of being categories.

4) Use the gallery as a form of feedback after a review. At the moment, it is not clear to me what id the best way for us to find about the results of a review. It is clear that our comments are listened to and in the next full set after a review changes based on the comments are made. These sets are numbered. Perhaps it would help if an email could go out to reviewers when the new set is available both a download and within the gallery. Perhaps the version number of the set could appear on the webpage of the gallery?

Or how about this? From now on every new symbols, after the review, could have a version tag.
At the moment the most recent review 9 has been reflected in the gallery while the download available is version. 8. I think that's fine. It would be nice to be able to type in review 9 and see the result, in the gallery. I really like the gallery on the website as a method of viewing what’s available, and also thinking about what’s needed.

5) Look carefully at what symbols are missing from the Mulberry set that would prevent us using or recommending them for the puposes that we use them for or see others wanting to use symbols for.

I think that the Mulberry symbol set is major development that will lead to much wider use of symbols – especially in the wider environment and people’s homes. It is worth us all getting behind it and helping it by being good reviewers. I know that means time. At this stage I would like to see the above ideas discussed. I think that they will help avoid confusion as the number of symbols grows.

First of all, I would like to say what a great project this is. I have just taken the time to look at the history of the project. This project is definitely one worth getting involved with.

However, I am not quite sure of the eventual aims. Is the aim to create a bank of really good symbols for use by a variety of users with communcation needs, or is the aim to create a set of symbols that can represent almost anything that might be spoken, including the grammar of spoken English?

I love getting to look at the next set of symbols to review. I like to see how well the symbols have been implemented. I love the neat touches like the little signifiers at the top right. However I begin to note some inconsistencies. How can there be inconsistnecies when there are no published principles for the design of new symbols. Well, there is a general consistency that the enquing mind appreciates and applauds.

I think it might be time to look at the grammar of the Mulberry set.

We need to get a handle on a few concepts;

Verbs - The convention seems to be that it's a picture of the faceless person. In which case, the faceless person should not be used for other purposes such as adjectives. Is it alright for some verbs to have people with faces?

Collective Nouns; food, clothes etc.

Adjectives

I have to admit that I missed something in the last review-009. This was picked up by lostris and Mathew Lee. I commented favourably on 'hungry' and 'thirsty'. They pointed out that the character was 'thinking about beer' or 'thinking about bread' rather than thinking about food or eating, drink or drinking.
I'd like to say that they were right and I was wrong.

I know that it is possible to be too pedantic, but I'd like to see a list of guidelines published before too long. For one thing this would allow us to review new character sets more critically. Also, it might allow some us us to contribute some suggested symbols. I am rather worried that some errors might be creeping in that would cost a great amount of effort to solve in the future.

I know that the grammar of an alternative communication system is a huge piece of work - probably a PhD for someone!
I'd like an awareness of where the Straight Street Mulberry symbols set is going. I'd like to discsuss the issues of a grammar and ways of adhering to it a consistent way that will prevent us from having to change a whole lot of symbols at a later date.

I hope that reviewers will join in this dicussion.

Again, let me say how important I think this project is and how worthwhile it is for us to pull together and help make it a success.

The purpose of this thread is to convey a common understanding of what we mean by "scanning" in this project. (This dialogue copied from our Str-Str Mantis tracker, and will continue here...)

Please download the example .exe by clicking on Project1.zip just below this. Once you unzip the attached exe, you will see a BIG BUTTON which says "start scanning".

Just before you do that, you will note that you can drag around the square box - it doesn't do anything yet,

The main aim of this is to show how scanning might be incorporated.....

a) click on the big button (this is your first left-click) - then big button disappears and scanning is started - the square box now travels automatically around the colour choices.........

b) think of a colour,

c) as the square box passes over a colour, perform another left-click anywhere on the screen (this will be the second click you've performed)

d) now you will see a greater degree of refinement as the scanning travels across the boxes in the middle.

e) click again (your third click) when the box moves over your desired colour

f) now you will see that scanning has moved down to the three buttons underneath......

......of course, next, scanning should move over to the symbol grid on the left, for you to apply your desired action - but I have simply looped it back to the beginning again......

so, comments, please - what do you think of this as an idea ?

The aim of this exercise was to ensure that we all know what is meant by "scanning", and this is one potential implementation - we also talked about moving "cross-hairs" over ove a colour grid instead.
